Welcome to the Live Art Falmouth Website

"Established as the foremost platform for experimental and innovative art in Cornwall. It has helped raise the profile of art in Cornwall, and particularly Falmouth in the process, especially this year when it attracted performers and critics from around the world.”, Rupert White

LAF08/07 ARCHIVE

Live Art Falmouth is a platform that explores a wide range of performative practices and promotes student engagement on all levels of the project, from showing their own work, to organising and shaping the event. This two-day platform features artists from the emerging to the established, local to international, as well as University College Falmouth student artists from both Falmouth and Dartington campuses and alumni.

This year, Live Art Falmouth was grander in scale than LAF07, attracting hundreds of visitors throughout the two days. With 24 hours of performances both on the main site and others occurring around the town, a total of 86 pieces of work and over 100 entries in the programme, LAF distinctively took the shape of a large scale international festival in Falmouth this year and a platform that performers from all around the world at different stages of their career would want to be part of. Despite experiencing delays running up to launch of the website and submission deadline, we received over 200 submissions, illustrating the demand for an event of this nature in the UK. LAF08 has proved a very positive step towards putting Falmouth and UCF on to the map nationally and internationally for live art and performance practice and we look forward to furthering this with LAF09.

LAF08 was shaped by LAF08 project managers and student mentors Paul Carter and Alexandra Zierle with a team of student artists and staff from University College Falmouth incorporating Dartington College of Arts.

History

Live Art Falmouth
took place for the first time in June 2007. A team of students from University College Falmouth in the UK, alumni and Penzance based curators Andy Whall and Delpha Hudson of Art Surgery collaborated in the development and curation of the event- the first of its kind in Cornwall. More than 35 international, regional, and student artists contributed to an innovative programme of live and performance art, including interactive video installation, cutting edge technology, live VJ-ing, video screening of performance based video work, sound/sonic art performances and an artist led discussion. This two-day platform featured artists ranging from the emerging to the established, those working locally to internationally, including University College Falmouth student artists and alumni.

Audience and artist's quotes

“Live Art Falmouth was a highlight of last year. I’d never been to see a performance piece before, never mind visiting a performance festival. But it was a wonderful, inspiring, visceral event, which I remember very fondly”, John Stanbury

“There was so much to see that I failed to take it all in, there was such a range of work”, Rebecca Weeks

“The show left me feeling positive as one of the artists and as a member of the audience”, Rebecca Weeks

“Live Art Falmouth 07 presented some really engaging art as well as being incredibly good fun”, Kate Southworth

“Live Art Falmouth was another event, which, like TRACT last year showed that - against the odds - live art continues to be one of the strengths of the local art scene. It continues, arguably, to also provide the most important focus for experimental art”, Rupert White
