about the artwork
Saturday 7th June, 2pm, Gllynvase Beach, Falmouth, Cornwall, UK
Nine couples will emerge group in close formation, according to a prearranged plan, kiss each other for ten minutes, and then disperse.
Kissing is a project that has already been performed for Leeds’ Perambulator Live Art event, and more recently, at Tate Liverpool. The artist, Claire Blundell Jones, has been awarded an Arts Council Grant to re-create Kissing in public spaces in and around Leeds. Kissing II will involve performers of all ages, sexual orientations, backgrounds and interests.
“Tender!” exclaimed Clare Charnley.
This piece has reminded people of Judd’s Minimalist sculptures, Manet’s paintings and ‘March of the Penguins’.
‘Kissing II’ investigates whether a living sculpture is to be regarded as aesthetically beautiful or repulsive, as some people perceive public affection to be. The artist’s aim is to provoke a reaction from the public and to gauge people’s perceptions of this act, when multiplied and choreographed for visual effect. Personal reactions to the performance usually range from feelings of longing and nostalgia to feelings of tension and disgust. The piece explores the boundaries of personal space, alienation and restraint.
